The research of our lab focuses on the dynamics of emergent behavior out of seemingly simple interactions. Our approach is mathematical but we work in collaboration with ecologists, molecular biologists and evolutionary biologists to combine modeling and experiments. Our interests include:
- the study of cooperation as a building block of evolutionary construction (e.g. in the transition from single cells to multicellular organisms, or from hunter gatherer to large scale societies).
- the study of networks of interacting individuals of the same species, with a focus on dynamical networks and their impact on the emergence and stability of social behaviors.
- the study of networks of interacting individuals of different species, with a focus on multiple host - multiple partner interactions.
- the study of intra and interspecific interactions in microbes with a focus on social behavior (cooperation, defection, altruism) but from the perspective of the role of ecological contexts in shaping the individual microbe strategies.
- the study of termite induced pattern formation and its effects on the productivity and stability of the ecosystem.
